Staffreport

SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Staff recommends the City Council adopt a resolution to accept a one-time grant award of $40,000 from the PLAY 60, Play On initiative presented by 50 Fund and the NFL Foundation and to appropriate the funds.

BACKGROUND

PLAY 60, Play On initiative presented by 50 Fund and the NFL Foundation, is putting kids and families first in the San Francisco Bay Area by transforming everyday spaces into places for play.  Guided by KaBOOM!, $750,000 in grant funding was available to 21 Bay Area cities, nonprofit organizations, businesses and individuals through a competitive grant process.

On October 16, 2015 the Recreation and Human Services Department applied for a $40,000 grant to host five (5) community based events to bring fun, art, and adventure into underutilized spaces.  Utilizing partnerships with mobile artists and vendors in the community, these interactive and dynamic events will create innovative and community connections through fun, play based activities.  Creating community play opportunities for all ages will bring together the San Leandro community and revitalize spaces to spark creativity and fun.  The City will facilitate securing spaces and transforming spaces into innovative play areas that promote fun, art, and positive social experience.

If appropriated, the $40,000 in grant funds will be utilized for the following five (5) events:

1.                     Cherry Festival 2016 - Art & Innovation Space;

2.                     Teen Takeover 2016 - to host one weekly session

3.                     School District Partnership - one event hosted at a school site

4.                     Senior Event - to host a special daytime event for seniors at the BAL Theatre

5.                     Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration - guests, artists, performers

On November 16, 2015 the City of San Leandro was awarded a $40,000 grant through the PLAY 60, Play On initiative.  Through this partnership with 50 Fund and the NFL Foundation the Recreation and Human Services Department will deliver “play everywhere” - creative and innovative neighborhood projects that will make balanced and active play more easily accessible in the San Leandro community.  The number of kids positively impacted will continue to grow in the months leading up to Super Bowl 50 as playful transformations occur at grocery stores, in empty lots, on sidewalks, crosswalks and closed streets all over the Bay Area.

Fiscal Impact

The acceptance of the grant will not impact the General Fund. If approved, the City will receive $40,000 to provide grant deliverables to the San Leandro community.  Staff requests that the City Council approve appropriation of funds from the PLAY 60, Play On Initiative to account #150-61-043 for $40,000.
