SUMMARY
The Rotary Club of San Leandro is celebrating its 100th anniversary. As part of the celebration, the Rotary Club will make a $100,000 donation to the City to support the installation of a new fitness court at Marina Park. The donation will support both the installation of the fitness court and commemorative elements recognizing the Rotary Club’s centennial, including locally designed artwork integrated into the fitness court and a monument with a dedication plaque at the site.
This contribution reflects the Rotary Club of San Leandro’s continued commitment to community service and aligns with City efforts to expand access to outdoor recreation and wellness amenities.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Staff recommend the City Council adopt a Resolution to accept the donation from the Rotary Club of San Leandro and authorize the City Manager to execute all documents and appropriate $100,000 to support the installation of the fitness court and related commemorative improvements at Marina Park.
BACKGROUND
The Rotary Club of San Leandro is a local chapter of Rotary International, a global service organization dedicated to improving communities through volunteerism and leadership. The Club was founded in 1926 and will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2026.
Since its inception, it has been dedicated to carrying out service projects that benefit the San Leandro community and support broader humanitarian initiatives through community improvement, youth development, education, public health, and participation in international service projects.
The Rotary Club of San Leandro has provided invaluable financial and volunteer support for various park enhancements in San Leandro including KABOOM! sponsored playground renovations at Toyon Park, Washington Manor Park, and Tony B. Santos Park. Beyond the Club’s support for City projects, the Club has been a fixture in the community providing youth activities, community beautification projects, community cleanups, and support to local organizations through the San Leandro Rotary Endowment.
In addition to its local impact, Rotary Club members support international service efforts focused on education, public health, and access to basic resources, reflecting the organization’s broader mission of service above self.
Analysis
The $100,000 donation will contribute towards the installation of a National Fitness Campaign fitness court at Marina Park, as confirmed in the Rotary Club’s commitment letter dated April 1, 2026. The project, which was approved by Council on February 17, 2026, has an estimated cost of $325,000.
The donation will offset project costs and support key enhancements, including a local artist program to incorporate artwork recognizing the Rotary Club’s legacy of contributions to the community, and its 100th year anniversary.
The project will include installation of a monument and commemorative plaque recognizing the Rotary Club of San Leandro’s centennial, consistent with the Club’s vision for a lasting community feature.
This partnership leverages private funding to enhance public infrastructure, reduces reliance on City funds, and delivers a high-visibility recreational amenity aligned with the Recreation and Parks Master Plan’s goals of health, wellness, and equitable access.
