Honoring Transgender Awareness Week and Transgender Day of Remembrance
WHEREAS, all people deserve to live in a community that respects their dignity, safety, and overall well-being; and
WHEREAS, transgender people from all walks of life continue to face high levels of discrimination, fear, and stigma; and
WHEREAS, each year between November 14th - 20th, Transgender Awareness Week raises the visibility of transgender people and to address the issues they face; and
WHEREAS, the week concludes with Transgender Day of Remembrance on November 20th, which brings awareness to hate crimes committed against transgender people and honors the memory of those harmed and killed by senseless acts of violence; and
WHEREAS, according to available federal data sources, there are approximately one million people in the United States who identify as transgender, representing 0.6% of the adult population. The San Francisco Bay Area has one of the highest percentages of adults who identify under the LGBTQA+ umbrella; and
WHEREAS, the City of San Leandro benefits from the diversity of its population and seeks to promote inclusion of all people as a testament to our shared values of dignity, equity, and fair treatment, without regard to gender identity or expression.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Pauline Russo Cutter, Mayor of the City of San Leandro, do hereby proclaim the week of November 14th-20th as "Transgender Awareness Week" and November 20th as “Transgender Day of Remembrance” in San Leandro and encourage all residents to join in this worthwhile cause to promote inclusion, equity, and understanding of transgender people in our community.
