SUMMARY
The San Leandro Public Library received $34,210 from the Friends of the San Leandro Public Library in order to do a campaign for Library Card sign up month, provide an enhanced Summer Library Program, and provide more programs at the Manor Branch Library.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Staff recommends the City Council adopt a resolution to accept the Friends of the San Leandro Public Library donation totaling $34,210 and authorize the City Manager to execute all documents and appropriate the funds.
BACKGROUND
The Friends of the San Leandro Public Library was established in 1984 to support the San Leandro Public Library. They raise funds to support the library through used book, DVD, and CD sales, membership dues, and through their gift store. They have continuously supported the library throughout the years, and their donations and time as volunteers provide funding and support for library services, programs, materials, and promotion of the library.
Analysis
For FY2024, the Friends of the Library have provided $34,210 in donations for a Library Card sign up month awareness campaign, as well as funds to enhance the Summer Library Program and funds to expand programming at the Manor Branch Library.
Applicable General Plan Policies
• GOAL CSF-3 Sustain and expand a public library system that provides a destination for exploration and discovery, knowledge and information, leisure and cultural enrichment, and life-long learning opportunities for persons of all ages.
• Policy CSF-3.3 Adequate Funding. Ensure that library funding remains adequate to sustain or increase existing service levels, including staffing, programming, and technology upgrades. Maintain or exceed American Library Association standards throughout the City’s library system.
• Policy CSF-3.4 Libraries as Neighborhood Centers. Promote programs and events that affirm the role of the City’s libraries as community and neighborhood gathering places and that reflect the City’s diverse population.
• Policy CSF-3.5 Resources for Self-Improvement. Ensure that San Leandro’s libraries and other community institutions provide a setting for the open exchange of ideas and information and provide an opportunity for residents of all backgrounds to improve their skills and knowledge.
Summary of Public Outreach Efforts
A month-long outreach effort was conducted for Library Card sign up month. Library staff does outreach at different locations to promote library programs that the Friends fund.
Legal Analysis
The City Attorney reviewed these documents and agreements and approved them as to form.
Financial Impacts
Acceptance of this donation will not impact the General Fund. There is no local contribution required. The donation will be deposited into the 010-3803 Revenue Account and expended as follows:
