SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS
Staff recommends the City Council adopt a resolution to accept a gift from the Friends of the San Leandro Library (Friends) to the San Leandro Public Library (Library) for $3,000 to conduct a Community Reads program.
Staff further recommends the City Council authorize the City Manager to appropriate the funds in the Fiscal Year 2021-2022 budget.
BACKGROUND
A. The Friends are a separate 501(c)(3) volunteer run organization that supports and supplements the Library's operational needs. The two main ways the Friends support the operational needs of the Library is by contributing money and volunteers. The Friends derive revenue to donate to the Library from membership dues, used book sales, and donations to the Friends.
B. History: The Library has received many gift awards from the Friends since the Friends were established in 1984. The Library has conducted Community Reads programs in previous years. Those programs were well received by the community with considerable community participation. The previous Community Reads programs were funded by large national or regional grants. The Library was awarded those grants the maximum amount of times allowable by the granting organizations.
C. Current Program: The Library will be conducting a Community Reads program with Tommy Orange's book titled There, There as part of the Library's Sesquicentennial programming. The book is set in the Bay Area and San Leandro is referenced in it. This fictional title tackles topics of challenges that modern indigenous people face.
