SUMMARY
This contract provides for the replacement of the felled Cary Haas Pedestrian Bridge spanning over San Leandro Creek between Cary Drive and Haas Avenue with a prefabricated steel truss bridge as shown in project plans and specifications of Bid 25-26.013.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Staff recommend the following:
* Award a construction contract in the amount of $976,775 to Con-Quest Contractors, Inc. for the Cary Haas Pedestrian Bridge Replacement, Project No. 2024.1010; and
* Authorize the City Manager or designee to negotiate and approve individual change orders up to 10% (or $97,678) of the original contract amount; and
* Authorize the City Manager to negotiate and approve change orders up to a cumulative value of 30% (or $293,033) of the original contract amount
BACKGROUND
The Cary Haas Pedestrian bridge, formerly known as the Haas Footbridge, was constructed in 1972 over the San Leandro creek connecting Cary Drive and Haas Avenue. It had served as an alternate and pedestrian friendly path of travel for residents or visitors form the residential areas to/from Bancroft Middle School, Memorial Park, San Leandro Main Library, and the many retail businesses along Bancroft Avenue.
In March 2023, a severe storm event occurred which toppled trees onto the bridge. The bridge collapsed, disconnecting the frame from the abutment on the East ( Cary Drive side) and into the San Leandro creek. The removal of the disaster remnants and partial restoration efforts...
