March 12, 2023, as National Girl Scout Day in San Leandro
WHEREAS, Girl Scouting in the United States began on March 12, 1912 in Savannah, Georgia with 18 girls who participated in enrichment programs, service projects, outdoor activities, and adventures; and
WHEREAS, Girl Scout law states, "I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout"; and
WHEREAS, Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place with a slogan of "Do a Good Turn Daily"; and
WHEREAS, in Girl Scouts, girls develop their leadership potential through hands-on, girl-led, girl-centered learning in STEM, the outdoors, and entrepreneurship; and
WHEREAS, these activities help girls learn about the world around them, cultivate invaluable life skills, engage in self-exploration, and connect with others in a multicultural environment; and
WHEREAS, today, more than 59 million American women are Girl Scout alumnae, and 2.5 million girls and adult volunteers are active members nationally; and
WHEREAS, of this number, there are 3,600 volunteer-led troops in Northern California who support over 35,000 active Girl Scouts. The Dos Pueblos Service Unit based in San Leandro serves 164 Girl Scouts and 198 adults.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Juan Gonzalez, Mayor of the City of San Leandro, do hereby declare March 12, 2023, as "National Girl Scout Day" in San Leandro, and recognize the enrichment that the Girl Scouts have added to countless youth and families in San Leandro.
