BACKGROUND

The Crosstown Class IV Corridors Study project was identified as a high priority in the 2018 Update of the Bicycle and Pedestrian Master Plan (BPMP) based on a robust public planning process, review of existing data, and on the ground conditions. The City has been awarded a Sustainable Transportation Planning Grant to study the implementation of Class IV bicycle lanes on Bancroft Avenue and Williams Street.

The Crosstown Class IV Corridors Study will identify opportunities to improve safety, access, and mobility for all roadway users along Bancroft Avenue and Williams Street.  Bancroft Avenue and Williams Street are two major corridors that provide important connections to nine schools, transit, housing, recreation areas, and businesses. The Study will include community engagement and a detailed traffic and safety analysis. Community engagement will help identify key issues on both corridors and collaboratively develop design solutions. The Study will develop a set of recommendations for separated bike lanes and pedestrian improvements that the City can take forward for future funding opportunities.

The first phase of the community engagement concluded in October 2021 and focused on identifying existing conditions and mobility needs.  The next phase will solicit feedback on concept design options for each corridor through an online survey and community open houses.
