SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Staff recommends the City Council adopt a resolution to accept a one-time grant award of $40,000 from the PLAY 60, Play On initiative presented by 50 Fund and the NFL Foundation and to appropriate the funds.

BACKGROUND

PLAY 60, Play On initiative presented by 50 Fund and the NFL Foundation, is putting kids and families first in the San Francisco Bay Area by transforming everyday spaces into places for play. Guided by KaBOOM!, $750,000 in grant funding was available to 21 Bay Area cities, nonprofit organizations, businesses and individuals through a competitive grant process.

Creating community play opportunities for all ages will bring together the San Leandro community and revitalize spaces to spark creativity and fun. The City will facilitate securing spaces and transforming spaces into innovative play areas that promote fun, art, and positive social experience.

If appropriated, the $40,000 in grant funds will be utilized for the following five (5) events:
1. Cherry Festival 2016 - Art & Innovation Space;
2. Teen Takeover 2016 - to host one weekly session
3. School District Partnership - one event hosted at a school site
4. Senior Event - to host a special daytime event for seniors at the BAL Theatre
5. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration - guests, artists, performers
