June 2023 as Pride Month in San Leandro

WHEREAS, the City of San Leandro cherishes the value and dignity of each person and appreciates the importance of equality and freedom; and
WHEREAS, the City of San Leandro denounces prejudice and unfair discrimination based on age, gender identity, gender expression, race, color, religion, marital status, national origin, sexual orientation, or physical attributes as an affront to our fundamental principles; and
WHEREAS, Pride month began in June of 1969 on the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising in New York City; and
WHEREAS, the City of San Leandro appreciates the cultural, civic, and economic contributions of the LGBTQ+ community, all of whom strengthen our community and enrichen its diversity; and
WHEREAS, many LGBTQ+ residents have provided decades of hard work to organize their communities by making many sacrifices to pave the way for the civil rights we enjoy today; and
WHEREAS, for 29 years, the Lavender Seniors of the East Bay have been at the forefront in providing advocacy and education to promote broader understanding of diversity; and
WHEREAS it is imperative that everyone in our community, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity or expression, feel valued, safe, empowered, and supported by their peers and community leaders.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that I, Juan Gonzalez, Mayor of the City of San Leandro, do hereby proclaim the month of June 2023 as “PRIDE MONTH” in San Leandro.
