50 Years of Service by Davis Street Community Center

WHEREAS, Davis Street has been a key community leader since 1972 when they were launched in guiding families and individuals out of poverty and into productive lives, and has been a strong advocate for affordable health care, child care and remains committed to guiding their clients toward physical, financial, and mental well-being; and

WHEREAS, in 1995 with the San Leandro Rotary Club, built a Rotacare free medical clinic and in 2015 opened San Leandro's first federally qualified health center to provide primary medical, dental and behavioral health care; and responded to the COVID-19 pandemic with food, childcare for essential workers, telemedicine, testing, vaccination, and crisis counseling; and

WHEREAS, in 1998 in partnership with other agencies, Davis Street founded San Leandro Works, placing over 1000 people in livable wage jobs; and currently employs 82 employees; and

WHEREAS, Davis Street has strongly advocated for showcasing needs in our community through programs like Bikes For Tykes, Back to School Drives, and Holiday toy and meal drives, all of which encouraged different segments of our community to mobilize around supporting one or more of these events; and

WHEREAS, the hallmark of Davis Street is compassion and respect for each individual, and Davis Street remains responsive to and respectful of the cultural and linguistic needs of their clients, employees, and volunteers, and, has always focused on being client driven; and

WHEREAS, after 50 years of service Davis Street continues the mission to improve health, address poverty, and increase the quality of life with the view that residents are healthy financially self-sufficient and active participant in our community.
