Staff Update on Discussions with Internet Service Provider Common Networks

Staffreport

SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Staff will update the Committee on discussions with the internet service provider Common Network and their potential for expanding services to San Leandro.  This report is for information only.

BACKGROUND

Staff has begun preliminary discussions with a wireless Internet Service Provider (ISP) called Common Networks to explore expanding their residential service to San Leandro. They are currently operating in the Cities of Alameda and Santa Clara. Staff has identified City-owned infrastructure, such as the fiber optics network and facilities roof tops, that would make San Leandro an ideal expansion location. In addition, the Fiber Optic Master Plan found a strong desire among residents for more internet service options.

Staff is making the Facilities Committee members aware of these early discussions. Should the consultations continue in a positive manner, Staff hopes to bring the Common Networks potential project back to Facilities for a full discussion in the near future.
