BACKGROUND
The AC Transit BRT San Leandro Transit Center located at the San Leandro BART Station is the southern terminus of the BRT Project. The Transit Center features state-of-the-art BRT bus station platforms complete with furniture, artistic enhancements, security cameras, ticket vending machines, and real-time arrival displays. A layover facility will also be constructed, which will provide break room amenities for BRT operators. Construction of the San Leandro Transit Center is nearly completed; however, construction of the layover facility has been delayed due to Public Health Order 20-04, related to the coronavirus.
Analysis
In order to complete the construction in an efficient and timely manner, bus and shuttle loading zones were temporarily relocated. AC Transit’s Lines 1 and 801 operated from temporary bus stops on San Leandro Boulevard, as have the City of San Leandro’s LINKS shuttle and the Kaiser Permanente shuttle. The East Bay Paratransit and San Leandro’s FLEX shuttle operated from a location near the BART entrance. When the construction is complete the shuttle stops will be relocated to locations within the transit center. These locations will be reviewed with the Facilities and Transportation Committee.
