Filipino American History Month
WHEREAS, October 2022 marks the 435th anniversary of the earliest documented proof of Filipino presence on the shores of the west coast of the continental United States; and
WHEREAS, Filipino American History Month honors the history, accomplishments, pursuits, and the legacy of Filipinos in the United States; and
WHEREAS, Filipino Americans are the second largest Asian American group in the nation, the second largest ethnic group in California, and eight percent of San Leandro residents; and
WHEREAS, we recognize those who have empowered Filipino Americans at a time when communities all across the country come together to celebrate Filipino American History Month in recognition of Filipino immigrants and their descendants.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Pauline Russo Cutter, Mayor of the City of San Leandro, do hereby proclaim the month of October 2022 as “Filipino American History Month” in San Leandro and encourage the community to learn and appreciate Filipino Americans and their historic contributions to San Leandro and our nation.
