Indigenous People’s Day
WHEREAS, the Indigenous people were here long before the colonization of the Americas began. For generations, Federal policies systemically sought to assimilate and displace Native people and eradicate Native cultures; and
WHEREAS, Indigenous People’s Day was first proposed in 1977 at a United Nations conference to address discrimination against Natives. Today, we recognize Indigenous people’s resilience and strength as well as the immeasurable positive impact that they have made one very aspect of American society; and
WHEREAS, California is home to 109 federally recognized tribes and a number of other non-and previously federally recognized tribes. We honor America’s first inhabitants and the Tribal Nations and acknowledge the significant sacrifices made by Indigenous people and recognize their many ongoing contributions.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Pauline Russo Cutter, Mayor of the City of San Leandro, do hereby proclaim the tenth day of October 2022 as “Indigenous People’s Day” in San Leandro and encourage all residents to engage with the history, cultures, traditions, and contributions of the Indigenous People in our community.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the City of San Leandro to be affixed this third day of October 2022.
